Japanese Specific Cardiovascular Disease and Nuclear Cardiology Takotsubo cardiomyopathy: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, currently called apical ballooning syndrome or broken heart syndrome, was initially reported by Japanese group in 2001 (Tsuchihashi K, et al. JACC 2001:38:11-8). The authors named this symptom based on octopus catching pot whose shape is similar to apical ballooning observed by LVG. The disease concept is now very popular around the world.
